Matthew Thurlow Nelson, Norfolk farmer

holme houseHe was a farmer of 181 acres, employing 8 men and 3 boys at Holme-next-the-sea in Norfolk. This branch of the Nelson family was descended from the elder son of Edmund Nelson whilst Admiral Horatio Nelson was descended from Edmund’s younger son.

Matthew was the fourth of five and the eldest surviving son of Matthew Nelson of Holme-next-the-Sea and Anne Thurlow, only child of Giles Thurlow of Holme-next-the-Sea.

He was born on 5 March 1791, baptised there the next day and died at Holme-next-the-Sea, aged 73 on 25 February 1864.  He was buried there on 2 March 1864.


This memorial inscription is in the churchyard at St. Mary's, Holme-next-the-sea, where he is buried with his wife Martha Elizabeth Holley.

His will is dated 15 June 1861, and was proved at the Principal Registry on 20 April 1864.
