David Nelson VC 32.63KBDavid Nelson was born in Deraghland, Stradnoden, County Monaghan. He lived from 3 April 1886 to 8 April 1918 and was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Eager to be a soldier like many of his generation he joined up in 1908 and gained rapid promotion. He was 28 years old, and a sergeant in 'L' Battery (Royal Horse Artillery), during WW1 when the following Action at NĂ©ry took place for which he was awarded the VC. "On 1 September 1914, Sergeant David Nelson helped to bring the guns into action - with an officer Edward Kinder Bradbury and a warrant officer George Thomas Dorrell - under heavy fire and in spite of being severely wounded. He remained with the guns until all the ammunition was expended, although he had been ordered to retire to cover". He was made a 2nd Lt. on 15 November 1914 and later achieved the rank of major. Slowly he recovered from his serious injuries, married and returned to Monaghan where he was treated as a hero and given a ceremonial sword in recognition of his bravery and the distinction he'd brought to his home community. In 1918 he went back to France on reconnaissance and was killed when a shell hit the mess. He is buried at Lillers, France, on 8 April 1918. His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Imperial War Museum. He married Ada Jane Jessie Bishop on 14 November 1915 and had a son Victor Cyril. They both spent much time in North America after the war.
